The Weight Related Therapies Market US 2008

February 2008

The US weight treatment market is growing, driven by the increasing number of Americans who want to lose excess pounds or control their weight, in order to improve their appearance , their quality of life or their health.

Consumers demand weight treatment therapies which are in line with their changing lifestyles and expectations. They want fast remedies to remove unwanted weight. People are unwilling to alter their lifestyles (in terms of diet and exercise) and instead are looking for the easy or “passive solution” which brings almost immediate results. Due to the popularity of cosmetic medicine, interventionist solutions are now so widely accepted that consumers would opt for a “lunchtime treatment” that is, procedure and recovery with no downtime, where available.

At the same time, technology developments have created a new category for the spa sector. The range of weight related treatment options in terms both of types of procedures and the settings where these therapies are offered has multiplied. An increasing number of spas, medical spas and clinics provide “do-it-for-me” (DIFM) weight treatments which include body-shaping massages, lipo and injections. These are really “high comfort” services, in contrast to the traditional - but more active - do-it-yourself (DIY) diet and exercise programmes.

This new report The Weight Related Therapies Market US 2008 reveals that this category is now outperforming the overall spa market. Medical spas which provide weight treatments, reported sales increases of up to 25% in 2007 compared to 2006, due to strong demand for weight therapies. This compares with single digit growth rate in other spa treatment categories for the same period.

New technologies are allowing medical spas to grow their sales in these new categories. Weight-related therapies can represent up to 80% of total revenues , in volume and value terms, in a spa/medspa business. A striking commonality of the best performing weight related therapies in medical spas is that they are new therapies, that is, new to the market. Indeed some were only launched in the past 18 months. The new therapies are the result of technology developments in the fields of mechanical and energy-based devices (e.g. power assisted lipo-PAL) and in medication (e.g. fat injections).

Examples of the new therapies driving growth include:
Lasers
Cellulite or body contouring shaping treatments
Surgical fat removal or liposuction procedures
Fat burning injections
Endermologie ®
Mesotherapy meso lipo
New lipo, lipo sculpture

The entire weight loss market (including diet and fitness programmes, cosmetic surgery, etc ) generates annual sales of approx US$60bn. The performance of the different segments of the weight management therapy market is more difficult to forecast due to a number of uncertainties. Given the demand, some of these new weight treatment therapies have the potential to be blockbusters. Trends in the personal care market consistently show that the “no effort” option becomes the preferred method for consumers to achieve their goal. However, experts are conscious that there is low confidence in weight loss industry and the market is at the mercy of fickle and demanding consumers.
